DAWSONVILLE - About 1,000 feet of Thompson Road in Dawson County starting at Georgia 53 will close Thursday for about two months while it is rebuilt.

"Thompson Road will be made over completely at its intersection with State Route 53," said Harold Mull, Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) District Construction Engineer. "The road will be rebuilt to intersect SR 53 at the same grade as the state route, improving the distance motorists can see oncoming traffic therefore improving safety."

The $2.7 million project also includes construction of turning lanes on State Route 53. While Thompson Road is only expected to be closed for about two months, the contract calls for the entire project to be finished by June 30, 2013. The contractor is Baldwin Paving Company of Marietta.

While the road is closed, a signed detour will be in place directing traffic to use Georgia 53 to Hugh Stowers Road then to Thompson Road.
