ATLANTA (AP) Georgia law enforcement authorities say 19 fatal crashes occurred in the state during the recent Thanksgiving holiday travel period.

Department of Public Safety spokesman Gordy Wright reported the numbers early Monday, after the 102-hour Thanksgiving holiday travel period ended late Sunday night.

State troopers say they investigated a total of 622 traffic crashes between 6 p.m. Wednesday and late Sunday night. Those wrecks resulted in 263 injuries.

Authorities say alcohol is suspected as a contributing factor in four of the 11 traffic deaths investigated by troopers.

Five of the fatal crashes were reported in the North Georgia area. Alex Pagel, 21, of Cumming was killed Thanksgiving morning in a one-vehicle accident on Hwy. 369 at Reeves Road in Forsyth County. Sunday, Robert D. Barnett, 44, of Commerce was killed on Hwy. 326 in Banks County. Authorities said alcohol appeared to be a factor in both accidents.

Other fatalities in the region occurred in Elbert County and in the Jasper and Blue Ridge GSP regions.
