Buford blanks North Oconee, advances to quarterfinals

BOGART -- Buford advanced to the quarterfinals of the state playoffs for a 13th straight season after shutting out North Oconee 13-0 Friday night in Class AA.

Matthew Bonadies sandwiched a pair of field goals around a Taylor Mitchell-to-Mikey Bart TD pass in the second quarter to help seal the win.

After a scoreless first quarter, Bonadies gave Buford the lead with a 47-yard field goal. The Wolves put the game away in the final moments of the second quarter.

Taking advantage of a North Oconee fumble in Titans territory, Mitchell capped a Buford drive with a 20-yard TD pass to Mikey Bart with 1:33 left in the half and Bonadies finished the scoring with a 42-yard field goal as time expired. Mitchell combined with Montgomery VanGorder to help Buford pass for 86 yards, completing 8 of 12 attempts.

The Buford defense then went to work in the second half to help preserve the win. The Wolves held North Oconee to just 158 total yards of offense while Buford was busy piling up 276 yards rushing. Joshua Thomas led the way with 72 yards rushing.

Zavior Hoxie also had 52 yards and Dontravious Wilson put up 51 yards rushing for Buford.

The Wolves defense also came up big in the third quarter, holding North Oconee short on fourth down at the Buford 4. the Titans (10-2) also missed a 52-yard field goal attempt in the first quarter

The Wolves (9-3) next will have a rematch of last year's Class AA state semifinals when they travel to play Carver-Columbus.
