GAINESVILLE - Hall County and city of Gainesville fire investigators are trying to determine what caused a work vehicle at a business on Candler Highway to burst into flames Thursday morning.

Hall County Fire Marshal Scott Cagle said a passerby saw smoke around 7:30 a.m. coming from Simpson Grading on Highway 60 near Calvary Church Road. That motorist alerted 9-1-1.

"Firefighters did a tremendous job knocking the fire down and containing the fire to the vehicle with only smoke damage to the building itself," said Cagle.

He said the cause of the fire is unknown at this time, although it appears the origin of the blaze was the passenger side of the maintenance truck.

"This is a work vehicle with some oily rags that were on the seat," said Cagle. "We do have spontaneous combustion, not often, but that does happen from time to time."

Cagle said the vehicle was valued at around $15,000. He did not specify a dollar amount on smoke damage to the building.

He said no one was at the business at the time of the fire.
