ATLANTA - A former member of the Gainesville City School Board was arrested over the weekend at the Atlanta airport for allegedly having a loaded weapon in his carry-on bag.

Kelvin Jerome Simmons was detained by TSA agents after they told Clayton County police they spotted a gun when Simmons tried to pass through an X-ray machine at Hartsfield.

Agents said the .25 cal pistol was loaded with six bullets.

The Atlanta Journal Constitution reports that Simmons was booked into the Clayton County Jail Saturday morning and released on bond Sunday afternoon.

Reached by e-mail Tuesday afternoon, TSA Public Affairs spokesman for Atlanta Jon Allen confirmed the discovery of the pistol around 8:10 a.m. Saturday. According to Allen, the case was referred to airport police.

Allen said in addition to potential criminal charges, passengers who bring firearms to the checkpoint face a civil penalty from TSA that could total several thousand dollars.

It's the 83rd firearm TSA has discovered this year at Hartsfield-Jackson, according to Allen.
