GAINESVILLE - One of the candidates who ran for Georgia's Ninth District Congressional post has a new leadership position with the Lanier Tea Party Patriots.

Republican Roger Fitzpatrick of White County was elected president of the group Thursday. He said one of his goals in 2013 is making sure elected officials are held accountable.

"Making sure that we work closely with them to make sure that things that do occur are in line with what our Constitution calls for us to do," said Fitzpatrick.

Fitzpatrick, who is a retired educator, said he also wants to see the local Tea Party engage more north Georgians in the political process.

"[We want to emphasize] What our founders meant when they established this form of government and just really draw people into the process," said Fitzpatrick.

He noted, too, that he'd like to see more participation from outside of Hall County in the group.

"That's why they named it the Lanier Tea Party...because they wanted to attract people from the surrounding areas."

In addition to Fitzpatrick's election to the President's post, John Lipscomb will serve as Vice-president, while James Scruggs will serve as Secretary and Charmayne Scruggs and Tony Beatty will serve as co-Trasurers.
