Authorities say that police arriving at the apartment saw Pernell Presley, 21, with a knife in his hand and kneeling over his mother.
Officials said Presley refused to drop the knife and charged at the officers, one of whom shot him.
Presley was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital and listed in serious but stable condition.
Presley's mother, Trisa Stallworth, 42, was taken to Atlanta Medical Center and is listed in stable condition.
