BUFORD -- While Buford is known for its defense, the Wolves' offense showed it too is ready for the postseason on Friday, rolling up 476 yards in a 41-27 defeat of Cedar Grove at Tom Riden Stadium in Buford.

The third-ranked Wolves (8-3) rushed for 289 yards, including 107 yards and a touchdown from Zavior Hoxie to put away a dangerous Saints team that put up 326 yards of its own.

The victory pushed Buford through to the Class AAA second round, where they will travel to face North Oconee next Friday in Bogart.

The Wolves looked set to put Cedar Grove away early on Friday, taking a 14-0 lead on first quarter rushing touchdowns from Hoxie and Joshua Thomas, who finished with 91 yards and two scores.

Following a pattern that would remain for the rest of the contest, the Saints fired back on a seven-yard scoring run from Deion Sellers. Cedar Grove wouldn't let Buford put the game completely out of reach, though the Wolves made enough plays to maintain control.

Plenty of those plays came courtesy the arm of Montgomery VanGorder. The Buford quarterback completed 6 of 8 attempts for 118 yards and three touchdowns, including a 28-yard toss to Jaylen Mize in the third quarter and a 44-yard strike to David Curry at the start of the fourth quarter. Curry's scoring catch gave the Wolves some breathing room at 41-20 with 11:41 to play. Cedar Grove would not score again until 2:42 remained.

Buford completed passes to seven different receivers on the night.

The Wolves defense also held record-setting Cedar Grove quarterback Johnathan McCrary in check, allowing 202 passing yards but just one touchdown completion.
