ATLANTA - A former District Engineer for the Gainesville state DOT office Thursday was named Chief Engineer for the state Department of Transportation. Russell McMurry will succeed Gerald Ross, who retires December 31.

"I am extremely pleased to have selected Russell for this critical position," DOT Commissioner Keith Golden said after announcing the appointment at a meeting of the State Transportation Board here. "He brings a wealth of expertise in many disciplines and years of experience in many facets of Department operations."

A native of Hart County, McMurry currently serves as Director of Engineering Services for Georgia DOT. He previously spent five years as the Department's District Engineer for Northeast Georgia (the Gainesville office) as well as holding several other positions in that region and on the Department's general office staff.

"Following Gerald Ross is no small task," McMurry commented. "But I feel as though I've spent my entire career preparing for this moment. I am ready for the challenges and so appreciative of the commissioner and the board giving me this opportunity."

McMurry, a licensed Professional Engineer, has worked for Georgia DOT since 1990. He is a cum laude graduate of Georgia Southern University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering Technology.

Also Thursday, Ross was honored by the Board and Department staff for his 30 years of service, which included five months in 2009 as interim Commissioner.

"Gerald's professionalism, character, charisma and integrity leave an unmatched legacy at this Department," Board Member Robert Brown noted.
