Travelers Rest is on "peril" list

ATLANTA - The Georgia Trust has issued its "Places in Peril" list for 2013, and one of the ten sites is in northeast Georgia.

Travelers Rest State Historic Site is located near Toccoa in Stephens County. Travelers Rest was opened in 1815 as an inn for travelers on the historic Unicoi Turnpike.

According to Trust Director Mark McDonald, the list is issued each year to bring attention to historic entitites around the state that are endangered and need the help of community members for preservation.

Other historic places on the 2013 list include:

~Tift Warehouse, Albany
~Candler Park Golf Course, Atlanta
~Sweet Auburn Commercial District, Atlanta
~Dobbins Mining Landscape, Bartow County
~Stilesboro Academy, Taylorsville
~Cave Spring Log Cabin, Floyd County
~Monticello Commercial Building, Monticello
~Lexington Presbyterian Church, Lexington
~Hancock County Courthouse, Sparta
