Numbers in on student debt loads in Ga.

GAINESVILLE - The average student loan debt owed by graduates of Brenau University last year was more than $25,000.

That's just one of the findings contained in a recently released report on college student debt.

According to The Project On Student Debt, the average debt of 2011 graduates of the Gainesville school was $25,421, and 76 percent of graduates left school owing on student loans.

Among other colleges and universities in our area,68 percent of graduates of Piedmont College in Demorest left school last year with an average student loan debt of $20,407. Both Brenau and Piedmont are private schools.

Among public institutions in the area, the average debt among 2011 graduates of North Georgia College & State University last year was $10,128, with 55 percent of graduates leaving school in debt.

At the University of Georgia, meanwhile, 46 percent of graduates had debts averaging $18,569, while at Georgia Tech, the numbers were 50 percent and $23,427.

Statewide, the average debt was $22,440, owed by 58 percent of graduates. Georgia ranked 36th and 28th, respectively, in the two categories.
