RABBITTOWN -- After tying the game in regulation, East Hall opted to go for broke in overtime.

The gamble worked perfectly.

Austen Mahaffey plowed into the end zone for a two-point conversion to push the Vikings over West Hall 28-27 on Friday in Rabbittown.

The winning play was just part of a huge night for the senior Mahaffey, who also rushed 19 times for 82 yards and caught three passes for 80 yards and a touchdown in the victory.

Mahaffey pushed East Hall (3-4, 1-3 Region 7-AAA) in front in the second quarter, 6-0, thanks to a 12-yard scoring pass from Devin Watson. Yet West Hall responded impressively, as Spartans quarterback Zach English hit on back-to-back touchdown throws. The West Hall signal caller found Hunter Atkinson and Chase Jarrard to help the Spartans (2-5, 1-3) to a 13-6 halftime advantage.

Isaiah Rowe extended West Hall's lead to 20-6 on a three-yard touchdown run early in the third quarter.

East Hall came firing back on Zach Groover's five-yard scoring strike to Junior Lee, and the Vikings knotted the contest on a two-yard touchdown run from Edward Vergara and a two-point reverse run from Milton Whelchel with 5:03 left to play.

Rowe pushed West Hall in front in the first overtime with a four-yard run, but East Hall set up the winning play on a three-yard touchdown from Vergara.

The Vikings finished with 308 yards of offense, including 160 rushing. Groover and Watson split the passing yards, with Watson completing 3 of 7 for 80 yards and Groover going 4 for 9 for 68 yards.

English finished 10 of 26 for 126 yards, while Chase Jarrard hauled in four passes for 82 yards. Rowe rushed for 65 yards, while Antonio Pittman added 68 yards rushing on nine carries.

West Hall will look to bounce back next week against North Hall in Oakwood, while East Hall will travel to Banks County.
