Softball: Jackson Co. headed to Columbus; Jefferson stays alive; Dawson out

JEFFERSON -- Jackson County is Columbus-bound.

The Lady Panthers' softball team swept past Fannin County 3-2, 9-7 in a Class AAA playoff doubleheader on Wednesday to claim a spot in the eight-team Class AAA tournament in Columbus.

Jackson County will take on Chapel Hill in the first game of the Columbus championship tournament, beginning on Oct. 25.

The Lady Panthers could be joined by a number of other area teams in Columbus, including Buford, which split its first two games in a best-of-three series with Franklin County on Wednesday.

Region 8-AA champion Jefferson also split a doubleheader with Dade County Wednesday in the second round of the state playoffs.

The Lady Dragons dropped the first game 3-0 but rebounded with a 7-3 win in the second game to force a deciding third game on Thursday.

Jefferson had not allowed a run in the playoffs until Wednesday.

In other action, Dawson County, the third seed from Region 7-AAA, saw its title hopes end in Ringgold. The Lady Tigers lost 1-0 and 11-0 to Ringgold in their best-of-three series.

In Class AAAAAA, North Gwinnett's season came to an end after being swept by Archer 5-1 and 7-2 at home.
