GAINESVILLE - Developers of a poultry processing plant in the East Hall area can expect some opposition from area residents when they take their plan before the Hall County Planning Commission Monday night.

A grassroots campaign again the proposal by Z-H Farms, LLC is underway, and Rick Griffin is one of the residents spearheading the effort.

He said residents are worried about the odor that will come from the plant, as well as increased truck traffic in the area and the strain the plant would place on the the water supply.

"To process a chicken is 11 gallons per chicken, so if you want to do between two and five thousand that's over 100,000 gallons a month taken out of the well system," said Griffin. He said residents also are worried about run-off into nearby Cedar Creek.

In addition, Griffin said landowners are worried about the impact the plant might have on property values.

Z-H Farms, LLC is asking county planners to rezone 81 acres on Timberidge Road to allow for development of the plant.

Griffin said residents already have retained a lawyer and are gathering signatures on a petition that they will present to county planners Monday. The planning commission meets at 5:15 p.m. at the Georgia Mountains Center in downtown Gainesville.
