Week 6: Close finishes in 8-AAAAA; 7-AAA lopsided; big wins in 8-AA

There were a few eye-raising scorelines on Friday night, as area teams completed week 6 of prep football action -- including an extremely impressive victory in Jefferson.

There were some too-close-for-comfort moments for Gainesville and Flowery Branch on Friday night, but both teams pulled through for Region 8-AAAAA victories on the road -- the Red Elephants fending off Cedar Shoals 42-23 and the Falcons coming from behind to beat Apalachee 30-20.

Yet perhaps the biggest win of the night came at Memorial Stadium in Jefferson, as the Dragons torched No. 7 Washington-Wilkes 31-0. Jefferson scored early and fended off the previously undefeated Tigers for their biggest win of the campaign, moving to 2-0 in Region 8-AA.

The victory set up yet another big 8-AA showdown next week, as the Dragons travel to face Rabun County -- which is also undefeated in league play after pushing past Riverside Military 42-20 in Gainesville.

Meanwhile, fellow region rival Union County also moved to 1-1 in 8-AA play, knocking off Oglethorpe County to stay in the postseason race.

Region 7-AAA produced some lopsided results on Friday, with Dawson County thumping Banks County 45-9, North Hall squashing East Hall 60-12 and Buford blasted West Hall 61-0.

Elsewhere, Jackson County moved to 4-2 on the campaign with a 32-29 victory at Franklin County, while Commerce dropped its second straight, 19-14 to Athens Christian.
