Drug Take-Back Program becomes permanent for local law enforcement

UNDATED - Following the success of this weekend's federal Drug Take-Back Day, local officials have decided to make the program permanent at several locations.

Mitchell Posey with the Appalachian Drug Task Force said they want to be proactive in eliminating the opportunity for prescription drugs to fall into the wrong hands, so they've set up permanent drop-off locations outside the sheriff's offices in Lumpkin and White counties.

"We don't want people to have to simply wait for the three or four times that we do this a year and take the chance that they might actually miss the date," he said.

Posey said he's concerned bad weather in North Georgia this weekend deterred people from dropping off prescription medications.

He said authorities in Lumpkin, Towns, Union and White counties collected approximately 130 pounds of prescription medications this Saturday.

The Gainesville City Police Department, Hall County Sheriff's Office and the Oakwood City Police collected a total of 196 pounds of prescription and over-the-counter drugs during National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day. Called "Operation Pill Drop," the effort was a collaboration between the three law enforcement agencies, the Drug Free Coalition of Hall County and Northeast Georgia Medical Center's Safe Kids Gainesville / Hall County.
