COMMERCE - Firefighters spent much of the afternoon battling high winds to extinguish a woods and vehicle fire on Interstate 85 at the Banks/Jackson county line.

That fire, which involved a pickup truck and the woods just south of Exit 149 near the former location of The Pottery and across the interstate from Tanger Outlets, was reported around 1:30 p.m.

Firefighting apparatus blocked the outside northbound lane of Interstate 85 as firefighters used rakes and water hoses extinguishing the fire, which was in a pine thicket.
