GAINESVILLE - A seven-foot alligator that's been wandering parts of Hall County for years was caught over the weekend and euthanized.

The gator was seen Sunday afternoon crossing White Sulphur Road, apparently trying to make his way to Lake Lanier.

One resident in the area told Fox 5 she had seen the 'gator, which she named Gus, for the last four to five years.

State Department of Natural Resources officials say it is likely someone brought Gus to the area when he was small and turn him loose in the lake. Gus was put to death because the DNR felt he was too familiar with humans and might be a danger to them.

The alligator's skull and skin would be given to an educational facility for study.

It was not the first time an alligator has been spotted in Lake Lanier. One was seen in the lake in the summer of 2008. (See earlier stories.)

(Georgia News Network and the Associated Press contributed to this story.)
