Twenty-two-year-old Bianca Vera said she got out of her car following a minor accident on the Dawsonville Highway bridge near Gainesville Marina. She said she then noticed a tractor trailer speeding towards her.
"The semi-truck was going to hit my car which was then going to hit me, and I just knew that I wasn't going to make it," said Vera.
She said that's when she decided to jump into the lake.
"I hit the water and that's when I knew I was in big trouble because I had a long way to swim to get back to shore," said Vera.
She said she heard the tractor trailer hit her car as she made her way to shore.
Vera said she was on her way to North Georgia College and State University, where she is majoring in nursing, when the crash happened.
Gainesville Deputy Fire Chief Jerome Yarbrough said Vera suffered some injuries to her legs and hypothermia. He said she was taken to Northeast Georgia Medical Center for treatment.
He said no charges have been filed and the accident remains under investigation.
