U.S. District Judge William Duffey said Thursday it was "very troubling" that Brandon Joseph Rhode used a disposable razor to slash his wrists and throat before he was set to die on Tuesday. But Duffey added in his order that he doesn't believe Rhode's attorneys need additional time to investigate what led to the attempt.
Duffey ordered prisons officials to assign two guards to monitor Rhode and take other precautionary measures.
The 31-year-old is set to die Friday at 9 a.m. for the killings of 37-year-old Steven Moss, his 11-year-old son Bryan and 15-year-old daughter Kristin during a 1998 burglary of their Jones County home.
