NORCROSS - Traffic was tied up for hours Tuesday morning on Interstate 85 in Gwinnett County after a man committed suicide on a bridge overpass.

Gwinnett County Police Corporal Illana Spellman confirmed that a person was found hanging from a rope near the Indian Trail Road bridge around 6 a.m.

"There's a small cloverleaf area near a MARTA park and ride, so he wasn't directly over 85, however, he did hang himself from a rope on one of the bridges in the area," Spellman said.

She said the fire department cut the body down, and it was turned over to the medical examiner's office.

"It leads to possible personal problems," Spellman said. "That's the reason why he may have done this."

She said a passerby called authorities to report the suicide.

Spellman said the southbound ramp was shut down until the fire department arrived.

"We've had a few incidents in the past of persons threatening suicide on the bridges, but this is the first time in a long time where a person has actually succeeded," she said.

Details about the man's identity have not been released at this time.
