GAINESVILLE - Hall County commissioners Monday heard a suggestion for reopening boat ramps on Lake Lanier in these days of low lake levels.

Hall County Taxpayers Association President Doug Aiken said there's a way to re-open closed boat ramps and bring back some lost sales tax dollars.

"I'm after tax dollars," Aiken said. "There's things you can do to temporarily open a ramp, and that's use gravel."

Aiken proposed starting with the ramp at Bolding Mill Park by extending it with gravel; he also suggested leasing the Wahoo recreation area from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

PROCUREMENT CARD RE-ASSURANCE

Commissioner Bobby Banks sought and got re-assurance about county employee use of procurement cards in the wake of card abuse reports surfacing in Atlanta and Forsyth County.

Banks recalled Georgia Tech's problems with an employee who went overboard with purchases.

"The lady was buying cars and trucks and motorboats," Banks said. It amounted to $800,000 and I just wanted to make sure nothing like that happens here."

Banks learned that Hall County's cards have a limit and items approved for purchase with them are specified; no employee may buy food with a card.

According to reports, Forsyth employees have used cards to buy NASCAR tickets and meals at Hooters restaurants.
