ATHENS - The University of Georgia is bracing for possible layoffs as part of state-mandated budget cuts for all Georgia colleges.

Gov. Sonny Perdue asked every state agency to trim 3.5 percent from their budgets, but University System of Georgia Chancellor Erroll B. Davis told colleges to cut 5 percent. For UGA, that would mean about $20 million.

UGA senior vice president Tim Burgess says layoffs are possible under the cuts. The state Board of Regents will vote on a systemwide budget reduction plan at its meeting in August.

Those recommendations will be forwarded to state legislators, who will take up the issue when they convene in January. State tax revenues are down 1 percent, or $600 million, over the last year.
