CLEVELAND - White County property owners can expect the education portion of their property tax bill to go up this year.

The rate is expected to increase from the current 13.90 to 14.65 mills - a hike of .75 mill.

The White County School Board said at a recent hearing on the proposed tax rate that funding cuts from the state, soaring energy costs and personnel for the new Mossy Creek Elementary School make the increase inevitable.

The board, anticipating more state cuts, agreed things are not expected to get better anytime soon.

The board will hold two more hearings on the tax rate before officially adopting it.
