GAINESVILLE - The former captain of the Jefferson Police Department has been indicted by a federal grand jury for possession of a hand grenade and a handgun while being a drug user, according to officials with the United States Attorney's Office.

Authorities said Dennis Lamar Thomas, 49, of Jefferson, was allegedly an unlawful user of a controlled substance on Oct. 7 of this year while he possessed a .38 caliber Smith & Wesson handgun.

They said the indictment also charges that on Oct. 8, Thomas possessed a hand grenade which he had not registered in the National Firearms Registration and Transfer Record.

Officials said prior to the federal indictment, Thomas was arrested on related state charges.

Thomas was not a member of the Jefferson Police Department at the time of the incident, having been fired from his police post in 2007.
