Forsyth layoffs, pay raise freezes

UNDATED - Forsyth County employees have been told not to expect raises next year, and 26 of them are losing their jobs. It's all because of the economy. And, in Dawson County, officials there have stopped accepting recyclable plastics and glass, another fallout from the economy.

Forsyth County spokeswoman Jodi Gardner said the layoffs are in departments directly related to development in the county - engineering, code enforcement and planning and zoning.

The pay raises that are now on hold had been expected to be a part of the new budget that was adopted Thursday night.

Meantime, in Dawson County, the county recycling center will stop accepting glass and plastics as of Dec. 26. County officials say the market for such items is depressed because of the economic downturn.

Spokeswoman Cathy Brooks said the move will not mean any layoffs at the recycling center, and that paper, cardboard and aluminum are still being accepted at the recycling center.
