UNDATED - The statewide average for a gallon of regular gasoline was $1.64 Monday morning, according to AAA South, but Gainesville area prices are as much as 25-cents a gallon less.

One convenience store on Atlanta Highway in Gainesville was selling regular unleaded for $1.39 a gallon Monday afternoon, and the line to fill up was 4 to 5 cars deep at each pump. Another outlet just next door was selling regular for $1.44 a gallon; that's the same price posted at an outlet in Oakwood.

The website gasbuddy.com reported earlier today low prices ranging from $1.47 a gallon at three stations in North Gwinnett to $1.48 in Flowery Branch. The highest price in the area was $2.24 at one outlet in Toccoa.

Energy experts say gas hasn't been this cheap since March 2004.
