MORGANTON - A Fannin County man says he will try to qualify as a third-party candidate in the race for a northeast Georgia state Senate seat.

Mike Crane of Morganton plans to run as Southern Party candidate in the November General Election.

To do so, however, he must not only pay the usual qualifying fee but also submit a nomination petition.

In announcing his candidacy, Crane said government at all levels has "lost many of the principles of our Founding Fathers," and the goal of the Southern Party is to offer "a real choice" to voters - based on returning those principles.

The 51st state Senate District includes all or parts of Fannin, Union, White, Dawson, Lumpkin, Gilmer and Pickens counties.
