Green Bay Packers defensive end Joe Johnson was charged with contempt of court after failing to appear at a hearing to face marijuana possession charges.

"Apparently this is not very important to Mr. Johnson. We can't allow him to just come when he feels like it," State Court Judge Larry Mims said Monday after all the other cases had been heard.

After Johnson was arrested on a bench warrant in the afternoon, he had a hearing with the judge and agreed to pay double his original bond of $1,625, plus a $125 bench warrant fee _ a total of $3,375 to keep from being held in jail.

The prosecutor, Bob Richbourg, said Johnson told the judge "that his father died and the memorial services were held in Cleveland, Ohio, on Saturday."

"The interment is going to be in Missouri tomorrow (Tuesday) and he had failed to notify his attorney of this," Richbourg said. He said another hearing date will be scheduled.

Johnson, 30, of St. Louis, was arrested before dawn on May 22. Tift County sheriff's deputies reported finding a misdemeanor amount of marijuana in the car after stopping to see why the vehicle was sitting in the turn lane with its hazard lights flashing.

Johnson later told the Green Bay Press Gazette he was "near the car but not in it" and that "the marijuana was not possessed by me as an individual."

___

Information from: The Tifton Gazette
