GAINESVILLE - The candidates for the Ward 5 seat on the Gainesville City Council fielded questions from Gainesville Jaycees at the club's weekly meeting Thursday at the civic center.

Ruth Bruner, John Geyer, and Jeff Pierce answered questions ranging from residential annexation to having an elected mayor. The mayor's post currently rotates among city council members.

Bruner, a former city school board member, cited her background in discussing her qualifications.

Pierce said he grew up in Gainesville and as a life long citizen has a feel for the city's present and future needs.

Geyer, who ran for the post once before, said he's running again because he's concerned about Gainesville and preserving its quality of life.

The post is currently held by longtime council member Sissy Lawson, the current mayor, who has decided not to seek re-election.
