CLARKESVILLE - Despite protests from downtown merchants and the city council,Clarkesville's gazebo has been taken down.

When workers began tearing down the gazebo the day after Christmas, Clarkesville's city manager Richard Moore issued a stop order, which the workers ignored.

Police then issued tickets to the crane operator and the man in charge of a veteran's memorial, which Habersham County plans to erect on the site.

The dismantled structure was taken to the Clarkesville Fairgrounds.

Merchants had fought to keep the gazebo, which they consider the town's trademark.
