Second lawsuit filed in dispute between 'South' universities

SEWANEE, Tenn. - A second federal lawsuit has been filed in a name dispute between University of the South in Sewanee and South University in Savannah, Ga.<br> <br> The Tennessee university filed a lawsuit this month in U.S. District Court in Winchester, Tenn., claiming the Georgia university is infringing on its trademark.<br> <br> The Georgia school filed a separate federal lawsuit related to the name dispute in September.<br> <br> South University officials said they wanted the venue to be Savannah, but University of the South spokesman Joe Romano said Winchester is the proper venue because the school is trademarked here.<br> <br> The University of the South, a liberal arts school, has educated students since 1857 and the name is registered with the U.S. patent office, Romano said.<br> <br> South University is a private, for-profit institution with small campuses in Savannah; Montgomery, Ala.; West Palm Beach, Fla.; and Columbia, S.C. Its primary focus is on degrees in business and health professions. Founder John T. South said his institution&#39;s name is not a description of its location but his last name.<br>
