Betty Barron Eubanks

Obituary Date: Tuesday, October 2, 2018

Betty Barron Eubanks, age 84, passed away Tuesday, October 2, 2018. Betty was a lifelong resident of Forsyth County and a member of Haw Creek Baptist Church. Betty was married to Hoyt R. Eubanks who passed away in 2015. She is the mother to Linda Eubanks Casey and Patsy Eubanks Owens, wife of William L. Owens. She is also survived by: her four grandchildren Jennifer Hamby, Lee Monkus, Sarah Owens, and Lauren Owens; great grandchildren, Josiah Hamby and Abigail Hamby; 15 nieces and 12 nephews; and many other relatives.

Betty was the third child of Curtis and Allene Barron. She was born at home as were all of their 11 children except the last two. She is survived by five of her sisters, Mary Ann Samples, wife of Eddie Samples; Brenda Moore; Dianne Hansard, wife of Gene Hansard; Gail Fowler, wife of Jerry Fowler; and Regina Lee, wife of Danny Lee. She was preceded in death by her brothers Larmon, Rayburn, Roger, and Tommy Barron, and her sister Blondine Bazzarelli.

The Barrons were tenant farmers and the children all helped in the fields. The family moved from farm to farm mostly in the northern part of Forsyth County, Georgia. They raised cotton, corn, and other vegetables. At Christmas time each child received an orange in their stocking and maybe some pecans. Allene was a good seamstress as was her daughter Betty. Once Allene made a dress for Betty out of feed sacks. She took the sacks and bleached them before cutting out the dress and sewing it. Betty thought her dress was prettier than all the other girls’ dresses. Following in her mother’s footsteps, Betty learned to sew.

Betty worked at a number of businesses before finding her place as a seamstress at Forsyth Industries. There she helped to make clothing for many companies including Sears Roebuck & Co. and J.C. Penney. Betty worked at the sewing factory for many years. She was skilled at many different machines and often trained others. She made the sample clothes for the different buyers and would even have to model them. She once made the concert clothing for the Osmond Family and even made a shirt for her daughter to match Marie’s.

Though she spent all day sewing, while at home she always had several projects going on at any time. She always made sure that she and her daughters had matching dresses for Easter – red-checked with white trim, bright orange, and intricate smocking were some of the dresses she made. Preparing a school wardrobe filled the summer, and fall was focused on Christmas dresses. After leaving the factory, Betty continued to sew for others. She mostly did alterations, but also made some custom items as well. She even had some pretty impressive clients. Beyond the local fire department and City of Cumming employees, she sewed for Cybill Shepherd’s dad and Kenny Rogers. Mostly self-taught, she could fix anything and you could never tell it was fixed – it looked just like it was supposed to look.

Betty was also an accomplished artist. She was a charter member of the Mountain Ivy Decorative Artists and also belonged to the Dogwood Chapter of Atlanta Area Society of Decorative Artists. She painted weekly with her friends and won many awards at various art shows. Most noteworthy was the inclusion of one of her Christmas ornaments on the White House Christmas tree. That ornament is now archived by the White House Historical Association.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, October 6th at 11 pm in the Chapel of Ingram Funeral Home with Rev. Larry Vaughan, Rev. Ruel Martin, and Rev. Jimmy Hamby officiating. Interment will follow in Sawnee View Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends on Friday from 2:00 pm until 4:00 and 6:00 pm until 9:00 pm, and Saturday from 9:00 am until the hour of the service.
