Nelwyn Bagwell Turk

Obituary Date: Tuesday, October 17, 2017

 Mrs. Nelwyn Bagwell Turk age 84 of Gainesville, Georgia died on October 17, 2017 at Emory Hospital following a sudden illness. She was born on May 23, 1933 to Myrtle and A.D. Bagwell, Sr. Nelwyn was number 5 of a family that would eventually consist of 7 children. This was a close knit and hardworking family and one where loved abounded.

            Nelwyn was married to the love of her life, G. Hanes Turk until Hanes’ death in 2008. Her survivors include her children: Teressa and Gregg Sheffield and Deneise and Mike Peifer; grandchildren: Allison and Craig Wilson, Sabrina and Jeremy McNeal and Katie and Jake Dills; great grandchildren: Sam Wilson, Jack Wilson and Colton Dills. Along with her children, Nelwyn is survived by her sister, Montine McDaniel, brother and sister-in-law, W.A. and Joanne Bagwell and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Nelwyn is preceded in death by her son-in-law, Dale Channell and other family members.

            Nelwyn began her teaching career in 1942 at the age of 19 and retired in 1995. During her educational career she served as teacher, assistant principal and principal in elementary, middle and high schools in Hall County and also served as adjunct professor with North Georgia College. Nelwyn was also a member of numerous Professional Associations and had just recently been inducted to the Brenau University Alumni Hall of Fame. Her dedication to education throughout her life was extraordinary.

            Nelwyn was a member of Mountain View Baptist Church where she was respected as a leader and served in many leadership roles. She taught Sunday School and was the Choir Director for over 45 years and also served as a Church Trustee.

            Nelwyn’s family would like to say a special thank you to her guardian angels: Joanne, Melva, Paulette, Rose and Sonia. Nelwyn has always shown her love and loyalty to her family, her profession, her schools and her community.

            Funeral services are scheduled for Saturday October 21, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. at Mountain View Baptist Church with interment to follow in Memorial Park Cemetery. Reverend Bobby Brown and M. Eugene Petersen will officiate. The family will receive friends on Friday October 20, 2017 from 2:00-4:00 p.m. and 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.   

            In Lieu of flowers the family has asked memorial contributions be made to Mountain View Baptist Church, 3765 Mountain View Road Gainesville, Ga 30504 Memorial Fund for Nelwyn B. Turk.
