Betty Jeanne Congdon

Betty Jeanne Congdon, age 84, of Clarkesville passed away Tuesday, April 4, 2017 at Northeast Georgia Medical Center following an extended illness.  

She was born on May 28, 1932 at Lake Burton to the late Richard Clinton Black and Wallace Cantrell Black.  She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Judge Hillyer and Laura Odelle Cantrell.

Survivors include her loving husband of 64 years, Bob Congdon; three cousins Dawn Johnson, Gail Dunn, and Michael Cantrell; and many nieces, nephews and good friends.

Mrs. Congdon graduated from the University of Tennessee and Western Carolina University with majors in science and physical education- subjects that she taught throughout her career.

She retired after 34 years with the Habersham County School System.  Mrs. Congdon also taught one year in Knoxville, Tennessee and one year in White County at the Nacoochee School. She taught at both the North and South Habersham schools and then spent her last six years as the hospital -home bound teacher for the county.

In 1954 she and her husband, Bob Congdon developed and operated Congdon's Landing, a marina on Lake Burton in Cherokee Cove. They sold their business in 1966 and continued to live at the lake. Lake Burton always had a special place in her heart. She attended church services at Moccasin Creek State Park on Lake Burton for over 50 years.

She loved to entertain and decorate during the holidays. She had a special  gift for making things seem magical.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 5-8 pm Friday at Hillside Chapel.  

A Celebration of Mrs. Congdon’s life will take place at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, April 8, 2017 in Hillside Memorial Chapel.
