Marvin H. “Woody” Wood Jr

Obituary Date: Thursday, October 20, 2016

Mr. Marvin H. “Woody” Wood Jr. age 78 of Gainesville passed away on Thursday October 20, 2016 at Ashton Senior Living Center following an extended illness from Alzheimer’s disease.

Funeral services are scheduled for Sunday October 23, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Memorial Park Funeral Home with interment to follow in Memorial Park Cemetery. Reverend Doug Saxton, Dr. Terry Crawford, and Reverend Bradley Elliott will officiate. The family will receive friends on Saturday, October 22, 2016 from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mr. Wood was born on April 16, 1938 in Gainesville, Ga to the late Marvin H. Wood Sr. and Cozetta Canada Wood. Mr. Wood was a lifelong resident of Hall County. He grew up in the New Holland Mill Village and later moved to Air Line Community. After working with the State Highway Department, Woody went to work for the U.S. Postal Service. He retired from the post office after 28 years of service, and he became interested in photography. For over 25 years he took wedding pictures, pictures for East Hall and West Hall Band and many pictures of children and families. He was a member of New Holland Baptist Church, and also served in the United Sates National Guard. Woody was always smiling and had a contagious laugh. He will be remembered for his precious laugh, love for sweet iced tea, collecting Coca-Cola products, love of many types of music and country western movies. His grandchildren knew to keep his sweet tea cold because if his ice melted he would shake his glass and ask for more. He is preceded in death by his parents.

Mr. Wood is survived by his wife of 43 years, Barbara Rogers Wood of Gainesville, daughter and son-in-law, Sally W. Smith (Randy) of Gainesville, son, Garry Allan Wood of Gainesville, son, Michael T. Pugh of Gainesville, grand-daughter and husband, Katie Pinson (Trey), grandson, Andrew Smith, grandson, Ty Smith, grand-daughter and husband, Lauren Woody (Kevin), grand-daughter and husband, Lindsey Davenport (Jarvis), grandson, Dylan Roberts, great grand-son, Hampton Woody, great-grand-daughter, Eva Grace Davenport, sister and brother-in-law, Margaret W.
