Shirley Harrison Long

Shirley Harrison Long, 81 and a lifelong resident died on October 11, 2016 after a period of declining health.  She was a 1953 graduate of River Bend High School where she played basketball.  She attended Gainesville College.  She was a member of River Bend Baptist Church.  She worked for Warren Featherbone for 10 years.  She worked at the U.S. Forest Service for over 31 years.  Mrs. Long was a member of the Pilot Club and Buck R Us investment group.  Her greatest satisfactions were the love of extended family and working in her flower garden.

Mrs. Long is the ninth of 11 children of the late Ella Shewbert and Loy C. Harrison Sr.  She is survived by her daughters, Shirlene (Keith) Elkins of Lawrenceville, GA, Rita Burch and Nita Quinn of Gainesville.  She is also survived by grandchildren and great grandchildren:  Angela, Kason, Lisa, Dustin, Liberty, Eva, Caitlin, Destiny, Conner, Ava, Ryan, Kelsi and Sophia.  Survivors also include sisters:  Viola Peppers of Lexington, SC, Barbara Posufs of Clermont and Betty (Douglas) Childs of Gainesville, and numerous nieces and nephews and great nieces and great nephews.

She is preceded in death by brothers and sisters:  Alvin Harrison, L.C. Harrison Jr., J.N. Harrison, Vera Adams Starnes, Mildred Harrison, Mary Dyer and Ruth Puckett all of Gainesville.

The family wishes to thank Dr. Jeff Terry and his staff and the staff of the Hospice of the Northeast Georgia Medical Center.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday October 13, 2016 at 2:00pm at the Chapel of Memorial Park North Riverside.  Interment will follow at South bend United Methodist Church Cemetery, 3512 Clarks Bridge Road Gainesville, Georgia 30506.  The family will receive friends on Wednesday October 12, 2016 from 5pm-7pm at Memorial Park North Riverside Chapel.
