Lee Strom Carroll

Lee Strom Carroll, 76, of Gainesville, died after a brief illness on Wednesday, July 23, 2014.

Lee was born in LaGrange, GA before moving to the Gainesville area in 1964. He was an avid baseball player, softball player, and coach, making many friends throughout his 42 year career. He was inducted into the Georgia U.S.S.S.A. Slow Pitch Softball Hall of Fame on October 23rd, 2010. He was credited by many players as being responsible for introducing tournament level softball to the North Georgia Region. You could always find him rain or shine on the ball field as a player, coach, or umpire pursuing his passion for softball. Over the years he collected many trophies which he gave away to the children at the church that he loved so much.

Lee was a beloved member of The Highland's United Methodist Church. He loved nothing better than greeting church members on Sunday morning and talking to anyone that would listen.

Lee is survived by his wife of 59 years, JoAnn Nixon Carroll, and sons and daughters-in-laws; Kenneth and Martha Carroll of Hoschton, GA, and Joe and Andrea Carroll of Suwanee, GA. He was known as "Poppy" to his grandchildren, and was a wonderful grandfather to Morgan & Mark Yavinsky of Roswell, GA, Ryan & Shelbie Carroll of Flowery Branch, GA, Matthew & Caroline Carroll of Alpharetta, GA, and Haley Carroll of Suwanee, GA. Great-grandchildren; Jackson Yavinsky and Max Yavinsky of Roswell, GA. Other survivors include his sister, Nancy Hart of LaGrange GA, brother and sister-in-law Sonny & Peggy Carroll of Bossier City, LA, and brother-in-law & sister-in-law, Fred & Vickie Nixon of Roanoke, AL. He was Uncle Strom to his many nieces and nephews that he dearly loved. Lee was preceded in death by his parents, Herman and Sallie Carroll and sister, Dorothy Mitchell of La Grange, GA.

Visitation will be held on August 2, 2014 from 2-3 pm with a Celebration of Life service immediately following at 3:00 pm at The Highland's United Methodist Church, Gainesville, GA 30506

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to The Highland's United Methodist Church-Children's Ministry 3678 Cleveland Highway, Gainesville, GA 30506
