Chester Arthur Crowell, Jr

Obituary Date: Tuesday, April 22, 2014

Chester Arthur Crowell, Jr. passed away at the age of 93, on April 22, 2014, at his home in Dahlonega, Georgia following a battle with cancer.




Mr. Crowell was born and raised in Cordele, Georgia. He served in the US Army Corps of Engineers during WW2 in the Philippines and participated in the post war activities in Japan. Following the war, he attended and graduated from Georgia Tech with a degree in architecture. He designed numerous schools and churches during his 41 years in his own business in Macon, Georgia. He was a member of the Macon Lions Club for 33 years. In 1988, he retired and moved to Gainesville, Florida where he lived for 28 years with his wife Billie Lowry Crowell. While in Gainesville, Florida, he was a member of the Kiwanis Club, the Gainesville Fine Arts Association, the Barber Gators, the Decrepit Birdmen, and the First United Methodist Church. He enjoyed flying his own plane, painting, and wood craftsmanship.




In 2013, Mr. Crowell designed and built a home in Dahlonega on the farm of his youngest son, Tom.




Mr. Crowell was preceded in death by his first wife, Betty Jean Griffith Crowell and by his third wife, Billy Lowry Crowell.




Mr. Crowell is survived by two sons and daughter-in-law, C. Arthur Crowell III of Macon, Ga., and Tom and Mary Kay Crowell of Dahlonega, Ga., two step sons and daughter-in-law, Dean Lowry, Frank and Midori Lowry and a step daughter, Katherine Tilley, all of Gainesville, Florida. In addition, he is survived by three grandchildren Chace, Amber and Ciera, three step grandchildren, Jonathon, Denise and Jack, and five great grandchildren.




A memorial service will be held at the Dahlonega United Methodist Church on Saturday, May 3, 2014. Visitation is at 11:00am, Service at 11:30, Reception at 12 noon in the fellowship hall.



Donations in lieu of flowers can be made to Hospice of North East Georgia or the Lumpkin County Humane Society.
