Robert Ivan Patten

Obituary Date: Monday, December 2, 2013
Robert I. Patten, age 87, of Gainesville passed away Monday, December 2, 2013.



Funeral services are scheduled for Wednesday, December 4, 2013 at 3:00 p.m. in the chapel of Little & Davenport Funeral Home with Rev. Calvin Haney officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. until the service hour.



Mr. Patten was born September 4, 1926 in Richmond, Indiana as the only child of the late Robert and LaVon Patten. He was a paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne Division of the U.S. Army when World War II came to an end. He attended the University of Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering. He was a member of Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society, the Tau Beta Pi Honor Society and the Chi Epsilon National Honorary Civil Engineering Fraternity.



Mr. Patten came to Gainesville in the 1950s and served as its first city engineer. He went on to work as engineer for Wallis Asphalt and Land Company eventually becoming part owner and serving as President of the company until his retirement in 1986. During those years, he was instrumental in the creation of a number of commercial and residential developments in Hall County. Mr. Patten was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church and was active in the Northeast chapter of the Georgia Society of Professional Engineers.



Mr. Patton is survived by his loving wife Willa Rae Patten; daughter and son in law, Pam and Denver Bowen of Cornelia; son, Brian Patten of Gainesville; daughter and son in law, Debbie and Chuck Walls of Gainesville; son and daughter in law, Brad and Jennifer Patten of Gainesville; daughter, Nancy Pate of Acworth; 11 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Mr. Patten was a devoted husband and father who always put his family first. He will be missed.



The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Johnnie, Tina and Whitney of Hospice of Northeast Georgia Medical Center and to the staff at Dogwood Forest for the loving care provided to our dad over the past three years.
