Joel Darrell Hewell

Joel Darrell Hewell, Sr., age 67, of Alto, passed away Wednesday, October 23, 2013 at his residence.
Born on November 02, 1945 in Clinton, South Carolina, he was a son of the late George F. and Eliza Marie Crumley Hewell. Mr. Hewell was a member and a deacon of Antioch Holiness Church. He was employed with Mt. Vernon Mills and was a brick and block mason. He was also a U.S. Army Vietnam veteran. In his spare time, he enjoyed carving and collecting walking sticks and spending time with his family.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Hewell was also preceded in death by brothers, Daniel, David and Albert Hewell.
Survivors include son and daughter-in-law, Joel Darrell, Jr. and Malena Hewell of Alto; grandchildren, Auston and MaKayla Hewell both of Alto; stepson and wife, Jeff and Kathy Herrin of Cornelia; stepdaughter and husband, Kim and Keith Canup of Clarkesville; sisters, Geraldine Hulsey of Alto and Oneda Phagan of Lula; brothers, Nelson Hewell of Alto and George Hewell of Mt. Airy.

Funeral services are 11:00 am Saturday, October 26, 2013, at the Chapel of McGahee-Griffin & Stewart with Rev. Graylen Armour and Rev. Jacob Armour officiating. Interment will follow in Antioch Holiness Church Cemetery with full military honors provided by the Grant Reeves V.F.W. Post # 7720, American Legion Post # 84, Rabun County D.A.V. Chapter # 15, and the Georgia National Guard.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 5-8 pm on Friday.
