James E. Phillips

Obituary Date: Thursday, May 23, 2013

James E. Phillips departed this earth on May 23, 2013. Mr. Jim Phillips was born in Punxsutawney, Pa in 1923; lived in Cuyahoga Falls, OH, retired to Clearwater, Florida, and recently moved to Cumming, Ga to be near his daughter, Joyce Frederick.

He worked with the Summit County Juvenile Court as head of psychological services for 30 years. Their library was named in his honor. Poetry, nonfiction, and philosophy books were his passion. He could quote hundreds of passages from memory, choosing an appropriate message for any occasion. He was a member of the Unitarian Universalist congregations in Akron, Ohio and in Clearwater Florida, although in later years his spiritual life returned to his traditional roots.

Jim is survived by his wife of 66 years, J. Joyce Phillips, older brother Ken Phillips of Punxsutawney, son Dr. James S Phillips of Huston, daughter Joyce (Tom) Frederick of Cumming and four grandchildren, Matthew and Kimberly Frederick, Erin and Lisa Phillips, and great-grandson, Julian. "Papa" was especially grateful to Matt, Diana, Kim, and Ryan for their devotion during his recent surgery and illness.

Memorials can be given to St. Jude's Children Hospital, a cause that was dear to his heart.
