Nina Griffin Smith

Obituary Date: Wednesday, December 12, 2012
NINA GRIFFIN SMITH, age 107 of Alto, Georgia passed away on Wednesday,
December 12, 2012, before moving to Alto Mrs. Smith resided in Chicago
and in Atlanta most of her life.

Mrs. Smith was born in Fort Payne DeKalb County, AL, on January 7,
1905, to the late John Oscar and Christina Rains Griffin. In addition
to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, A.T. Smith,
four sisters, two brothers, and three great-grandsons. Mrs. Smith was
a member of First Baptist Church, Cornelia. She rode a train from
Crossville, TN to Chicago to meet her future husband A.T. Smith and
they were married for 77 years at his death. Mrs. Smith was a retired
teacher and homemaker. She taught school in a one room school in
Alabama and also taught in Atlanta. Mrs. Smith was a pianist in First
Alliance Church in Atlanta and also played in First Baptist Church
Sunday School, in Cornelia.

Survivors include daughter and son-in-law, Anita and Buster Cleveland,
Alto; sons and daughters-in-law, Wayne and Evelyn Smith, Tucker and
Thurston and Diane Smith, West Columbia, TX; nine grandchildren and
seven great-grandchildren. Mrs. Smith was last of her immediate
family.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. on Tuesday, December 18, 2012,
Whitfield Funeral Home, South Chapel, Baldwin, Georgia with Rev. Gene
Todd officiating. Interment will follow in the Yonah Memorial Gardens.
