Ruth Whelchel Nix

Obituary Date: Tuesday, July 3, 2012
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, July 6, 2012 in the Chapel of Little & Davenport Funeral Home for Ruth Nix, 94, of Oakwood who passed away Tuesday, July 03, 2012, at New Horizons West following a period of declining health. The Rev. Mark Outlaw will officiate. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday, July 5, 2012 from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. and from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Born on February 17, 1918, she was the daughter of the late Joe and Maggie Whelchel. She was owner and operator of Chicopee Florist; and for a number of years worked at Alene's Flower Cottage. She was a member of Redwine United Methodist Church.

She is survived by her daughter, Judy Morrow of Oakwood; grandchildren, Eddie and Shanda Millwood of Hoschton, Thom Millwood of Decatur, Kit and Robyn Morrow of Hiram, GA, Cody Morrow of Oakwood; great grandchildren, Beau, Brelynn, Brody Millwood of Hoschton, Hayden & Colton Morrow of Hiram, GA; sister, Irene Brooks and Gertrude Moxley of Wilmore, KY, sister and brother-in-law, Josephine and Leland Buice of Gainesville; sister-in-law, Jeanette Whelchel of Chestnut Mountain; brothers Rev. Albert Whelchel of Wilmore, KY, Ray Whelchel of Lexington, Ky and a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by her husband, Dewey "Dude" Nix; daughter, Carol Millwood; sister, Blanche Cash and brother, Ernest Whelchel.

Everyone who knew "Mama Ruth" knew of her love for flowers. Her work has been on display through the years in countless weddings and funeral throughout the North Georgia area. She was a true artist that loved her work. Her love for flowers was only exceeded by her love for the Lord and her family. She was a true example of selfless love and served as a wonderful model for all that knew her. Her legacy will carry on forever.
