John C. Lewellen

Dr. John C. Lewellen, age 61, of Gainesville, Georgia, passed away Friday, May 25, 2012 at his residence surrounded by family and friends.

A memorial service is scheduled for 5:00 pm Tuesday, May 29, 2012 at Memorial Park North Riverside Chapel. The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 pm Tuesday, May 29, 2012 at the funeral home prior to the service. Chaplain Jeff Thompson will officiate.

He was born May 17, 1951 in El Paso, Texas and is the son of Polly (King) Lewellen and the late Thomas Lee Lewellen. He attended Henderson State University and graduated from the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in 1976. He also received his certification from the American Board of Emergency Medicine which he has maintained throughout his career. He was also a fellow in the American College of Emergency Physicians. In 1991 he received membership to the Southern Medical Association. Dr. Lewellen has recently received the Lifetime Achievement Award from Northeast Georgia Medical Center. Dr. Lewellen served as the assistant director of the Emergency Medical Department assuming the position of director of the Emergency Medical Department for the past 5 years. He was preceded in death by his father, Thomas Lewellen and a brother, J. B. Lewellen.

He is survived by his wife, Melinda Sue (McNally) Lewellen of Gainesville; mother, Polly (King) Lewellen, daughters and sons-in-law, Candis and Bryan Smith, Sarah and Todd Kinsey; son, David Stover; grandsons, Courtland Stover and Cohen Smith, granddaughter, Bentley Kinsey; brother, Dr. Tommy Lewellen and Mary and sisters and brothers-in-law, Sharon and Danny Sumrall, Becky and David McNeely and Cindy and Larry Deno; mother-in-law, Bette McNally; in-laws, Debbie James, Mike (Sherry) McNally and Dawn (Terry) Bush; a number of nieces and nephews; along with friends and kids of the ER of Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville, GA.
