Ellen Whitmire Hammond

Funeral services for Ellen Whitmire Hammond, age 85, of Mt. Airy will be Saturday, May 7, 2011 at 2:00 PM from the Hillside Memorial Chapel. Rev. Billy Burrell will officiate with interment to follow the service in the V. F. W. Cemetery, Cornelia.

Mrs. Hammond passed away Wednesday, May 4, 2011 at The Oaks at Scenic View.

Born October 20, 1925 in Dawson County, Mrs. Hammond was the daughter of the late William M. and Lula Carnes Whitmire. Mrs. Hammond was a member of Mt. Carmel Baptist Church and she was retired from Scovill Fasteners, Inc. After retiring, Mrs. Hammond was a beautician and a Certified Nursing Assistant at Habersham Home. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Hammond is preceded in death by her husband Charlie Hammond, son Phillip Hammond, brothers Emmett Whitmire, William M. Whitmire, Jr., Gerald Whitmire, and Jerry Whitmire, sisters Opal Hammond, Betty Cahill, Lillian Whitmire, and Martha Johns.

Survivors include daughters and sons in law Deborah and Chip Morris of Gainesville and Phyllis and Bob Danforth of Newnan, son Michael Hammond of Mt. Airy, brother Talmadge Whitmire of Mt. Airy, sisters Josephine Nix of Dawsonville and Joy Dixon, Darlene Church, and Lynn Sims all of Clarkesville, as well as eight grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday, May 6, 2011 from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Habitat for Humanity, P.O. Box 982, Clarkesville, GA 30523.

At this time the family would like to extend a special thank you to the faculty and staff of The Oaks at Scenic View for the love and care shown to Mrs. Hammond during her time there.
