J. Grady 'Pops' Collins

Obituary Date: Sunday, February 27, 2011
Mr. J. Grady "Pops" Collins, 87, of Gainesville passed away peacefully February 27, 2011 at the New Horizons West Nursing Home following an extended illness.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00am Wednesday March 2, 2011 in the chapel of Little & Davenport Funeral Home. The Rev. Scott Wilson will officiate. Interment will follow in the Concord Baptist Church Cemetery in Forsyth County. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday March 1, 2011 from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.

Grady Collins was born April 4, 1923 in Forsyth County, Georgia to the late Tan and Ella Collins. He was a lifelong resident of Gainesville and had worked at Swift Poultry Company, and later retired from Fieldale Poultry Company. For 50 years he lived with the late Hubert and Edna Bruce and their family, John and Liz Bruce, Jackie and Elaine Bruce and Janet Bruce. They always made him feel like he was apart of their family.
On a beautiful day you would see Grady walking all around Gainesville and Hall County. He enjoyed cutting grass and going fishing which he did as often as he could. Grady enjoyed visiting Puckett's Barber Shop (just off the downtown square) for a haircut, shave and just to shoot the breeze. All employees and customers at Waffle House on Candler Highway called him "Pops". He was a kind and gentle man with a sense of humor and never had a harsh word to say about anybody.

Mr. Collins was preceded in death by his parents, Tan and Ella Collins, sisters, Pauline Howell, Minnie Irene Swift, Ruby Strayhorn and brother, T.J. Collins.
Survivors include his sisters; Louise Gazaway, Cumming; Mary Lou Roberts, Gainesville; Gertrude Skates, South Carolina; a number of nieces and nephews also survive.

A special heartfelt "Thank You" to all the Caregivers, Nurses, Residents, staff and Administration of the New Horizons West Nursing Home for the care and concern you have given to Grady.
