Virginia Caroline Maddox

Obituary Date: Sunday, February 13, 2011
Alexander Funeral Home of Cleveland announces the death of Mrs. Virginia Caroline Davis Maddox passed away after a brief illness at her residence in Cleveland, Georgia on February 13, 2011.

Virginia was born in Toccoa, Georgia, on October 26, 1931. She graduated from Toccoa High School as Valedictorian of her 1949 class. She went on to achieve an Associate of Arts degree from Emory University at Oxford, where she met her future husband, Belman C. Maddox, and later received a Bachelor of Science degree in Interior Design and Architecture and her Realtor's License. Dr. and Mrs. Maddox recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.

Virginia was a gourmet chef, studying French, Japanese and German cuisine in classes around the world. For her service in the American-German Wives cooking club in Heidelberg Germany, she was presented the last original post-World War Two compilation cookbook. She was proud to be an Army wife and loved the travel, cultural exchanges, and experiences worshiping and working in Methodist churches all over the country. After retiring to Cleveland, Virginia designed and supervised the building of their new home, often referring to it as her "Little Garden of Eden." She was a lifetime member of United Methodist Women, and a long time member of the Cleveland United Methodist Church. Virginia served in all positions of the UMW, volunteered at Mildred's Thrift store, and was on the White County Food Pantry Board of Directors.

In 1984, Belman and Virginia were the first volunteer Interpreters for the Red Bird Mission. The couple traveled extensively throughout the Alabama/Western Florida conference, telling the story of the Red Bird Mission---how lives in Appalachia were changed by the presence of Christian schools, medical aid, new farming techniques, and starting new churches in Appalachia.

Virginia was preceded in death by her parents, Alfred F. Davis and Nina R. Davis of Toccoa, Georgia, and one brother, Aaron M. Davis (Susan) of Simpsonville, South Carolina. She is survived by her husband and all of their three children, Margaret Morrow (Michael) of Cleveland, Georgia, Belman "Neil" Maddox Jr. (Karen) of Harrisonburg, Virginia, and Susan Crowe of Marble Hill, Georgia. Virginia is also survived by three grandchildren, David O'Brien, Caitlin Crowe and Adam Morrow, and one great-granddaughter, Kayla O'Brien. Surviving brothers and sisters include Frank J. Davis (Sarah) of Oxford, Georgia, Earl T. Davis (Elaine) of Cataula, Georgia, Curtis C. Davis (Ronda) of Dawsonville, Georgia, Betty Greene (Buddye) of Greenville, South Carolina, and Evelyn Davis of Woodstock, Georgia.
