Louise Abigail Coombs Barfield

Louise Abigail Coombs Barfield, age 93 of Dahlonega, GA, formerly of Atlanta and Douglasville, GA passed away November 20, 2010 at her residence, following an extended illness.

Mrs. Barfield was born to Raleigh and Ethel Coombs on March 22, 1917, in Hapeville, GA. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 38 years, Lt. Ed Barfield, Atlanta Police Department (retired), son-in-law, Spencer Mercer, four brothers, Tom Raleigh, George and Joe Coombs and one sister, Elizabeth "Blackie" Coombs Sherman.

Survivors are one daughter, Joan Barfield-Mercer, Dahlonega, and one son, Capt. Ed Barfield, Jr., (retired), Hall Co. Sheriff's Office, and a wife, Nancy Pinson Barfield, Flowery Branch, and grandchildren, Roman and Alayna Mercer, Lynn Clark and husband, Greg, Lana Norris and husband, Jeff, and Christy Babushkina, great-grandchildren, Jared Charles, Ryan and Drew Norris and Nik Babushkin. Mrs. Barfield was also foster grandmother to more than 90 foster children while she lived in Douglas County, GA. During the past eight years, she was a special "grandmother" and cargiver for her neighbors, twins Kendall and Kaselyn Martin. She is also survived by two sisters, Ethel Coombs Ammons and husband Ben, Hogansville, and Mildred Coombs Moran of Dallas, GA., and many nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Barfield graduated from high school in Atlanta and worked for many years for the Ga. Dept. of Public Safety, Driver's License Division, the Ga. Bureau of Investigation and with the Ga. Department of Labor. She was an active member of Lakewood Baptist Church, Gainesville and enjoyed her Faithful Workers Bible Study Group. Before moving to Gainesville, she duplicated and delivered sermon tapes to shut-ins as a part of the ministry at First Baptist Church of Lithia Springs and delivered Meals on Wheels for many years to residents in Douglas County. She was a talented seamstress, knitting and crocheting afghans and other beautiful pieces for her family. She was also an avid reader of the Holy Bible and a faithful Prayer Warrior.

Mrs. Barfield has been a loving Christian mother to her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, many relatives and friends and will be truly missed. May our precious mother rest in peace.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Building Fun at Lakewood Baptist Church, 2235 Thompson Bridge Road, Gainesville, GA 30501, or to Hospice of Northeast Georgia Medical Center, 2150 Limestone Pkwy., Suite 222, Gainesville, GA 30501.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at Memorial Park Funeral Home North-Riverside Chapel, 989 Riverside Drive, Gainesville, GA 30501, on November 22, 2010 at 11:00 am with visitation one hour prior to the service. Dr. Tom Smiley and Dr. Jerry Gill will officiate. There will also be a graveside service at Willow Springs Baptist Church Cemetery, Dallas, GA at 3:30 pm with Dr. Marion Beaver presiding.
