Mrs. Jan Cook, 78 of Gainesville died peacefully on Wednesday September 1, 2010 at the Northeast Georgia Medical Center. Mrs. Cook had a very strong passion for her family and friends and will be greatly missed. She was a beloved mother, grandmother, and friend to all that knew her.

A native of Waycross, Georgia, Mrs. Cook had lived in Hall County since 1960. She was the daughter of the late Roe E. and Evelyn Elizabeth Lanier Murray. Mrs. Cook was a graduate of Waycross High School and the University of Georgia with a B.S. degree in social work and a Masters in Education. While in Waycross, Mrs. Cook worked as a social worker with the Waycross City System. She taught for more than 30 years in the Hall County School System. Her long career included teaching social studies many years in the Oakwood Elementary School. She greatly loved her students, colleagues, and her subject matter. She was an ardent fan of history, the newspaper and current affairs. Mrs. Cook was a long-term member of the First United Methodist Church of Oakwood and loved being a part of the church community.

Growing up, she has many fond memories of summer spent with friends and family at St. Simons Island, Ga.

Survivors include her daughters and sons-in-law; Rae Anne and Larry Locke, Westport, CT., Ellen and Philip Neece, Gainesville; grandchildren, Aubie Locke and Trevor Locke, both of Westport, Ct.and Wyatt Neece, Gainesville; sister and brother-in-law; Anne and Larry Barber, Waycross, Ga., brother-in-law and sister-in-law; B. Cecil Cook and Mary Cook, Atlanta; and her beloved cat, Bunny. She is preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Cook, a longtime Hall County educator.

A memorial and celebration of life will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday September 4, 2010 in the Little & Davenport Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Phil Williams and the Rev. Glenn Parrish will officiate. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Saturday September 4, 2010 from noon until 2:00 p.m.

Due to her love of animals, instead of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the Humane Society of Northeast Georgia, 845 West Ridge Road, Gainesville, Ga. 30501 in Mrs. Cook's memory.
